"Pirkanmaan äänimaisemat" (Pirkanmaa Soundscapes) is a project collecting descriptions and observations about soundscapes in the area of Pirkanmaa during the Spring, Summer and Autumn of 2009. The aim of the project is to explore the diversity of soundscapes within the area. We have been looking for information about different sounds connected to everyday life or special occasions, work or holiday, different seasons, urban or rural areas. The gathered soundscapes can be considered meaningful either on a personal or more general level.

We have been receiving proposals about sonic environments worth recording from February 2009 onwards, and storing and documenting the sound information with the proposer. Part of the soundscape proposals are being recorded and laid out on the web site. All proposals as well as the recordings and interviews will be filed in the archives of the Department of Music Anthropology, University of Tampere, Finland.

On this blog you can listen to and comment on different, already recorded soundscapes as well as explore the suggested descriptions (only in Finnish, sorry about that). The easiest way to do this is to click on the map provided (click 'kartta' above).

Pirkanmaan äänimaisemat is a project of soundscape recording, conservation and research. It is organized by The Finnish Society for Acoustic Ecology in collaboration with the school of art and media in Tampere University of Applied Sciences and the Department of Music Anthropology, University of Tampere. The project is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Pirkanmaa Regional Fund.
